Cockroaches are one of the most common pests in Melbourne homes. The small German cockroach is the one usually found in kitchens and bathrooms, while larger Australian and American cockroaches often wander in from gardens, drains and wall cavities.
Signs you have cockroaches
- Small dark droppings that look like ground pepper, often in cupboards and drawers
- Egg cases near appliances, sinks and hinges
- A musty, oily smell in enclosed spaces
- Cockroaches running for cover when you turn on a light at night
Seeing cockroaches during the day is often a sign of a larger infestation: their hiding spots are already full.
What you can do today
- Wipe benches, stovetops and floors each night so no crumbs or grease are left out
- Store food, including pet food, in sealed containers
- Fix dripping taps and leaks under sinks, since cockroaches need water
- Seal gaps around pipes and cabinets
- Empty kitchen bins daily and remove stacks of cardboard and paper
Supermarket sprays kill the cockroaches you can see, but they rarely reach the nest. With German cockroaches, sprays can also scatter the colony into new hiding spots.
Professional cockroach control
Our technicians start by finding where the cockroaches are hiding and breeding. We then apply targeted gel baits into hinges, cracks and voids, and use insect growth regulators where needed to stop the next generation developing. Heavy infestations may need a follow-up visit.
